Secondary instability and tertiary states in rotating plane Couette flow
AbstractRecent experimental studies have shown rich transition behaviour in rotating plane Couette flow (RPCF). In this paper we study the transition in supercritical RPCF theoretically by determination of equilibrium and periodic orbit tertiary states via Floquet analysis on secondary Taylor vortex solutions. Two new tertiary states are discovered which we name oscillatory wavy vortex flow (oWVF) and skewed vortex flow (SVF). We present the bifurcation routes and stability properties of these new tertiary states and, in addition, we describe a bifurcation procedure whereby a set of defected wavy twist vortices is approached. Further to this, transition scenarios at flow parameters relevant to experimental works are investigated by computation of the set of stable attractors which exist on a large domain. Bio-inspired canopies for the reduction of roughness noise
This work takes inspiration from the structure of the down covering the flight feathers of larger species of owls, which contributes to their ability to fly almost silently at frequencies above 1.6 kHz. Microscope photographs of the down show that it consists of hairs that form a structure similar to that of a forest. The hairs initially rise almost perpendicular to the feather surface but then bend over in the flow direction to form a canopy with an open area ratio of about 70 percent. Experiments have been performed to examine the noise radiated by a large open area ratio canopy suspended above a surface. The canopy is found to dramatically reduce pressure fluctuations on the underlying surface. While the canopy can produce its own sound, particularly at high frequencies, the reduction in surface pressure fluctuations can reduce the noise scattered from an underlying rough surface at lower frequencies. A theoretical model is developed which characterizes the mechanism of surface pressure reduction as a result of the mixing layer instability of flow over forest canopies.Office of Naval Research (Grant IDs: N00014-13-1-0244, N00014-14-1-0242
Phylogenetic Relationships among Deep-Sea and Chemosynthetic Sea Anemones: Actinoscyphiidae and Actinostolidae (Actiniaria: Mesomyaria)
Sea anemones (Cnidaria, Actiniaria) are present in all marine ecosystems, including chemosynthetic environments. The high level of endemicity of sea anemones in chemosynthetic environments and the taxonomic confusion in many of the groups to which these animals belong makes their systematic relationships obscure. We use five molecular markers to explore the phylogenetic relationships of the superfamily Mesomyaria, which includes most of the species that live in chemosynthetic, deep-sea, and polar sea habitats and to test the monophyly of the recently defined clades Actinostolina and Chemosynthina. We found that sea anemones of chemosynthetic environments derive from at least two different lineages: one lineage including acontiate deep-sea taxa and the other primarily encompassing shallow-water taxa
Impact of fractional excretion of sodium on a single morning void urine collection as an estimate of 24-hour urine sodium.
The standard for assessing dietary sodium intake is to measure 24-hour urine sodium. On average, 93% of daily sodium intake is excreted over 24-hours. Expense and difficulties in obtaining complete 24-hour collections have led to the measurement of sodium concentration in spot and single-void urine samples, using predictive equations to estimate 24-hour urine sodium. Although multiple predictive equations have been developed, in addition to having an average bias, all the equations overestimate 24-hour sodium at lower levels of 24-hour sodium and underestimate 24-hour urine sodium at higher levels of 24-hour sodium. One of the least biased estimating equations is the INTERSALT equation, which incorporates a spot urine creatinine concentration. The authors hypothesized that differential fractional excretion of sodium (FeNa)(derived from a morning void collection) relative to creatinine would impact on the accuracy of the INTERSALT equation in estimating 24-hour urine sodium. In a prospective study of 139 adults aged 65 years and over, three sequential morning void and 24-hour urine samples were examined. There was a significant correlation between increasing FENa and the difference between estimated and measured 24-hours urine sodium (r = 0.358, P < .01). In the lowest quartile of FENa, the INTERSALT equation overestimated 24-hour urine sodium, but underestimated 24-hour urine sodium with greater magnitude in each of the subsequent quartiles of FENa. Differential excretion of sodium relative to creatinine, potentially impacted by renal blood flow and hydration, among other factors, affected the accuracy of the INTERSALT equation. Additional research may refine the INTERSALT and other predictive equations to increase their accuracy
Mitochondrial and nuclear genes suggest that stony corals are monophyletic but most families of stony corals are not (Order Scleractinia, Class Anthozoa, Phylum Cnidaria)
Modern hard corals (Class Hexacorallia; Order Scleractinia) are widely studied because of their fundamental role in reef
building and their superb fossil record extending back to the Triassic. Nevertheless, interpretations of their evolutionary
relationships have been in flux for over a decade. Recent analyses undermine the legitimacy of traditional suborders,
families and genera, and suggest that a non-skeletal sister clade (Order Corallimorpharia) might be imbedded within the
stony corals. However, these studies either sampled a relatively limited array of taxa or assembled trees from heterogeneous
data sets. Here we provide a more comprehensive analysis of Scleractinia (127 species, 75 genera, 17 families) and various
outgroups, based on two mitochondrial genes (cytochrome oxidase I, cytochrome b), with analyses of nuclear genes (ßtubulin,
ribosomal DNA) of a subset of taxa to test unexpected relationships. Eleven of 16 families were found to be
polyphyletic. Strikingly, over one third of all families as conventionally defined contain representatives from the highly
divergent "robust" and "complex" clades. However, the recent suggestion that corallimorpharians are true corals that have
lost their skeletons was not upheld. Relationships were supported not only by mitochondrial and nuclear genes, but also
often by morphological characters which had been ignored or never noted previously. The concordance of molecular
characters and more carefully examined morphological characters suggests a future of greater taxonomic stability, as well as
the potential to trace the evolutionary history of this ecologically important group using fossils

Key features of palliative care service delivery to Indigenous peoples in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States: A comprehensive review
Background: Indigenous peoples in developed countries have reduced life expectancies, particularly from chronic diseases. The lack of access to and take up of palliative care services of Indigenous peoples is an ongoing concern.
Objectives: To examine and learn from published studies on provision of culturally safe palliative care service delivery to Indigenous people in Australia, New Zealand (NZ), Canada and the United States of America (USA); and to compare Indigenous peoples’ preferences, needs, opportunities and barriers to palliative care.
Methods: A comprehensive search of multiple databases was undertaken. Articles were included if they were published in English from 2000 onwards and related to palliative care service delivery for Indigenous populations; papers could use quantitative or qualitative approaches. Common themes were identified using thematic synthesis. Studies were evaluated using Daly’s hierarchy of evidence-for-practice in qualitative research.
Results: Of 522 articles screened, 39 were eligible for inclusion. Despite diversity in Indigenous peoples’ experiences across countries, some commonalities were noted in the preferences for palliative care of Indigenous people: to die close to or at home; involvement of family; and the integration of cultural practices. Barriers identified included inaccessibility, affordability, lack of awareness of services, perceptions of palliative care, and inappropriate services. Identified models attempted to address these gaps by adopting the following strategies: community engagement and ownership; flexibility in approach; continuing education and training; a whole-of-service approach; and local partnerships among multiple agencies. Better engagement with Indigenous clients, an increase in number of palliative care patients, improved outcomes, and understanding about palliative care by patients and their families were identified as positive achievements.
Conclusions: The results provide a comprehensive overview of identified effective practices with regards to palliative care delivered to Indigenous populations to guide future program developments in this field. Further research is required to explore the palliative care needs and experiences of Indigenous people living in urban areas
